INSTRUCTION - PIANO AND MUSIC THEORY
As a holder of a Master of Education and Master of Music degrees, as well as a Diploma in Teaching (Primary) and a Postgraduate Diploma in Education, Leon Gray enjoys realising his vocation as a fully-trained and classroom-experienced teacher.
Early in his career, he was appointed Head of Primary Music and Head of Drama at Auckland's, Kadimah College, before taking up specialist classroom music teaching positions with West Lothian Council in Scotland. In more recent years, he has worked in resource development, designing and building full courses of instruction for Practical Education Institute and Bay of Plenty Polytechnic. All this additional experience he brings to private teaching, teaching a programme that begins with each student, catering to his or her interests and needs. While he is affiliated with both ABRSM and TCL exams, student needs and the cultivation of ongoing, genuine, relevant interest in music performance are at the forefront of all programmes. |
"The only thing that matters is what interests the student. Exams can make students fearful of music lessons and practice; if a student wants to sit an exam, that's great, but presenting exams as the only option seems deeply unfair, if not insulting to the student's own sense of identity in performance. I teach students to identify what it is that they want to do with music, and then build a programme around THEIR goals. If they are naturally inclined to practice every day, they are encouraged to; if they are not because their interest in music is just for fun, I teach them the broad skills they need to pursue their own interest - lessons are our time to chat and have fun as they learn."
